A TV show based on the blockchain game Space Nation Online is in development and will be executive produced by Independence Day and Day After Tomorrow director Roland Emmerich. The show is expected to increase the drama and interest of sci-fi IPs, as well as potentially expand the reach of connected games.
Emmerich and fellow executive producer Marco Weber revealed details about the “Space Nation” show in an exclusive interview. decryptionThe series is currently estimated to launch in early 2027.
This series consists of 8 episodes, space nation onlinea cryptographically massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) recently soft launched On the Ethereum layer 2 network, Immutable zkEVM.
In this game, you are tasked with restarting a civilization in a faraway galaxy after aliens destroy your solar system. But as Emmerich explained, the TV show will spotlight a different part of the series' overall story.
“It's a story about a girl who actually wants to stay on Earth and protect it from the invaders. Now, about the invaders, you don't know much about them. You're the only one who knows they're coming. ” Emmerich said. decryptionGG. Explain your plans for the story at hand in more detail. After all, the enemy threat turns out to be huge.
“When they come, they're a much bigger force than you can imagine,” he added in the video interview above.
Emmerich is a renowned filmmaker with a filmography that includes Stargate, 2012, and the aforementioned blockbusters, and is hailed as a “master of disaster.” Along with “Igby Goes Down” producer Weber, the pair will spearhead the upcoming live-action “Space Nation” show.
“It's a bit like the Noah's Ark concept with a ticking clock,” Weber said. decryption. “They know there's going to be an attack from aliens, and they basically have to decide whether they want to stay on Earth and defend it, or whether they all get on Noah's Ark. That's a conflict.”
Of course, it's not that simple. Because only those with money and power can truly escape to a safe place. As a result, much of humanity is forced to remain there.
The show will “mostly” end where the MMORPG picks up: in a post-apocalyptic universe. Nevertheless, director Emmerich is considering producing multiple seasons if the show is successful, and is toying with the idea of ending the second season on a cliffhanger, leaving it as a prequel to the game.
Development has only recently begun. The concept for the show is solidified, and the pair are currently in the process of hiring writers to script the episodes. The “Space Nation” team hopes to have several scripts written before production begins in earnest within a year, and is expected to have another year to bring their vision to the screen.
From games to TV
Emmerich and Weber joined the project more than two years ago and were said to be co-founders behind the broader Space Nation IP, but had not started developing the show until now. This is because we wanted to ensure that our flagship MMORPG title built on Ethereum technology would launch without any major hitches.
Space Nation Online was published in a “soft launch” format in September, with the goal of pushing the game in front of a wider audience near the end of the year amid a steady stream of fixes and upgrades. Emmerich said he hasn't played the game yet, but the launch situation made him feel confident that Hollywood veterans could safely move forward with the show.
Although this is Emmerich's first public foray into the blockchain world via his connection to gaming, it is not his first private interaction with cryptocurrencies. In fact, he already understands the terminology.
“I own a lot of Bitcoin. I'm watching it grow, I'm more of a 'HODL' person,” Emmerich said. decryptionThis refers to the crypto-native acronym for “Hold On for Life,” or “Hold On for Life” to weather the immense volatility of cryptocurrency investing. “If we crash at the same point, we never get nervous because we know this is a long-term thing.”
He explained that as part of the deal with Space Nation, he will receive a portion of the OIK tokens for the soon-to-be-launched project.
“As founders and all of our team members, we have given ourselves a very long and conservative cliff,” Weber added. “So there is no pump-and-dump system.”
On November 10th, Space Nation will release an NFT collection featuring one of the game's ships designed by Emmerich. This is intended to test whether viewers would be interested in such a digital collection, as there is no utility planned for this asset. However, if it's successful, Space Nation plans to drop several times a year in the future.
They are not the first Hollywood talent to step into the crypto industry, but as Weber said, decryptionthey spent a good amount of time really digging into the future benefits of blockchain and the decentralized economy. That's exactly why they see so much potential in this universe.
“Over the past three years, we have put in a fair amount of effort to understand the gaming business, understand Web3, understand token economies and cryptocurrencies,” Weber said. “I think anyone who invests the time and is serious about it can find ways to make the most of their time.”
