Perplexity has become the latest AI company to release in-depth research tools with new features announced on Friday.
Google announced similar features of the Gemini AI platform in December. Openai then launched its own research agent earlier this month. All three companies have given the same name for this feature: Deep Research.
The goal is to provide more detailed answers with real quotes for more specialized use cases compared to what you get from a consumer chatbot. In a blog post announcing Deep Research, Perplexity wrote that the feature “excellent at a wide range of specialized tasks, from finance and marketing to product research.”
Perplexity Deep Research is currently available on the web and the company says it will soon be added to Mac, iOS and Android apps. To use it, select “Deep Search” from the dropdown menu when submitting a query with confusion. This will create detailed reports that can be exported as PDFs or shared as confusing pages.
To prepare this report, Perplexity said that deep research will “search documents, read, read reasons for what to do next, and improve the research plan to learn more about the subject area.” I've said that. . ”

The company also highlighted its performance in humanity's final exams. This is an AI benchmark test that includes expert-level questions in a variety of academic fields. Perplexity has earned 21.1% in testing, making it easy to make most other models, including Gemini Thinking (6.2%), GROK-2 (3.8%) and Openai's GPT-4o (3.3%) He said he would break, but he didn't match at all Openai's deep study (26.6%).
However, while currently, you'll need a $200 monthly pro subscription to use OpenAI's deep search (the company plans to expand to other subscription tiers), Perplexity's Deep Research is available for free. A per-day query gets unlimited queries while paying subscribers.
Perplexity's Deep Research also works faster, and it appears that Openai Deep Research will complete most tasks within 3 minutes compared to 5-30 minutes.
Asked to compare different deep search products, Prperxity provided an overview of various technologies, pricing models and performance for different use cases and subjects, as well as links to articles about each feature . The differences were summarized as follows:
- Confusing AI is excellent at speed and accessibility for casual researchers
- Openai is dominated by the analysis depth of enterprise applications
- Google integrates most seamlessly with the existing productivity ecosystem
As these tools become more common, it is too early to know how these tools affect daily and specialized research, but economists may also apply here these days It highlighted the shortcomings of Openai's deep research. To rely on “easy-to-obtain” sources, the big risk that “outsource all your research to Super Genius' assistants” is that “reduce the number of opportunities to get the best ideas” can”.
