In a heartfelt and unexpected tribute, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin took to X (formerly Twitter) to mourn the passing of Kabo-chan, the lovable Shiba Inu who inspired the iconic Dogecoin meme.
News of Kabosu's death was announced by his owner, Atsuko Sato, who announced that her beloved pet had died peacefully in his sleep. Sato said Kabosu's final moments were spent surrounded by the morning sun streaming in through the window and birds chirping, marking a peaceful end to the dog's joyous life.
Responding to a post announcing the passing of Kabo-chan’s owner, Atsuko Sato, Buterin posted a simple but moving message on his X account: “Rest in peace, Kabo-chan.”
Kabosu, affectionately nicknamed “Kabo-chan” by her fans, was more than just a meme. She was an icon of the playful spirit of the internet and cryptocurrency movement. Her image, featuring a quizzical expression, not only sparked a global meme phenomenon but also inspired Dogecoin, which started as a joke and is now the eighth most valuable cryptocurrency with a market capitalization of $22.88 billion.
Born around November 2, 2005, Kabosu was rescued from a puppy factory by Atsuko Sato, a kindergarten teacher living in Sakura City. The Doge meme, capturing Kabosu's iconic questioning expression, became an internet hit in 2013, spreading joy and laughter around the world.
News of Kabochan's passing has generated a huge reaction on social media, with members of the Dogecoin community, affectionately known as “Shibes,” and the crypto community in general continuing to pay tribute.
Dogecoin's official X account also posted a message of condolence, saying, “Today, our mutual friend and inspiration to our community, Kabosu, passed away peacefully in her owner's arms. The impact this one dog had around the world is immeasurable. She only knew happiness and boundless love.”
The Dogecoin Foundation also expressed their condolences to X, posting, “Dear Kabosu, our beloved Doge, rest in peace. You were such an amazing person.”
