Ethereum team leader Peter Sillage has criticized Farcaster for allegedly manipulating bots, raising concerns about the platform's transparency.
Ethereum core developer Peter Sillage doesn't seem to be a big fan of Farcaster, an open source decentralized social network, suggesting the platform is rife with bot operations.
In a recent He expressed skepticism about Farcaster's ecosystem, citing examples of alleged incidents.
Siraj said that since non-power users (those with fewer than 400 followers) are “excluded from everyone's feed by default,” it would be an “insane conflict of interest” for network developers not to fix this issue. He added that the current situation is “by default excluded from everyone's feed.” This project is similar to “Money and User Printer”.
“IMO the biggest problem is that there is an insane conflict of interest for FC.” [Farcaster] Developers should not eliminate bots. It's a printer of money and users. All you need to do is make it not so intrusive that it turns off your actual users. ” Peter Szilagyi
As of this writing, Farcaster has not made any public statement on the matter. Crypto.news has contacted the project and will update the article if we hear back.
This is not the first time Siraj has raised concerns about the network's transparency. In February, a blockchain developer questioned Farcaster's “organic growth” in an X post, saying his account on Farcaster grew 10x in a few days with “zero activity.”
Founded in 2020, Farcaster is a decentralized social network similar to X, but built on Ethereum's layer 2 solution, Optimism. In late March, reports surfaced that Merkle Manufactory, the company behind Farcaster, was on the verge of securing a major funding round led by Paradigm, valuing the company at around $1 billion. In July 2022, the company secured $30 million in a round led by the a16z cryptocurrency.
