The Trump administration has many National Science Foundation employees hand-picked for AI expertise, threatening the agency's ability to maintain key AI research, Bloomberg reported.
One of the affected sectors within the NSF, known as the Bureau of Technology, Innovation and Partnerships, helped to focus government grants focused on AI. According to Bloomberg, many review panels have been postponed or cancelled as a result of layoffs.
AI experts have criticized the Trump administration's recent cuts in scientific grants, particularly the cuts defended by billionaire Elon Musk's Office of Government Efficiency. In an X post, AI pioneer and Nobel Prize winner Geoffrey Hinton called for the expulsion of Musk from the Royal Society “because it is causing great damage to American scientific institutions.”
