FRANKLIN, Tenn. (WTVF) — There's a new scam going around that authorities want people to know isn't true, and it's happening all across Williamson County.
The Williamson County Sheriff's Office said the scam involves sending victims photos of their homes and asking for money.
Several people have received threatening emails claiming their phones have been compromised and their personal information accessed.
The extortion tactic involves attaching photos of the victim's home and demanding a ransom payment in Bitcoin. The sheriff's office said the claims were false and there was no evidence that personal devices were compromised.
To protect yourself, authorities urge people not to respond to emails, do not send money or click on any links in the email, and delete the email and do not engage with the sender.
If you have been the victim of a scam or know someone who has, please report it to the Sheriff's Office, who can help determine if there is an actual risk.
Remembering Eudora Boxley, a pioneer of television cooking from the early days of WLAC
As we celebrate our 70th anniversary, I love Ms. Forrest's story about News Channel 5 history. It's a story I didn't know until recently. Eudora Boxley had a live cooking show in the early days of the station. She may have been the first black person to air on News Channel 5 and probably one of the first African-Americans to have a television cooking show in the country. I didn't know about Ms. Boxley until her grandson contacted me. Thankfully, I was able to introduce him to Forrest and learn more about this great story in News Channel 5 history.
