
Seasonally adjusted euro area and European Union retail trade volumes rose slightly by 0.1% month-on-month in May 2024, according to data from Eurostat, the European Union's statistics office.
This follows a 0.2% decrease in April 2024.
The calendar-adjusted retail sales index rose 0.3% in the euro area and 0.6% in the EU compared to the same period last year.
In the euro area, retail trade volumes of food, beverages and tobacco increased by 0.7% month-on-month in May compared to April 2024.
Retail trade of non-food items (excluding motor fuel) decreased 0.2% from the previous month, while motor fuel in specialist stores increased 0.4%.
In the EU, sales of food, beverages and tobacco increased by 1.2% in May 2024 compared to April 2024, while non-food products decreased by 0.4%.

Denmark, Lithuania and Luxembourg led the increase in retail trade volumes during the month, increasing by 2.3%, 1.8% and 1.7% respectively.
The countries with the steepest declines were Slovakia, Ireland, Bulgaria and Malta.
In the euro area, retail trade volume in May 2024 increased 0.7% year-on-year for non-food products (excluding motor fuels), while food, beverages and tobacco increased 0.3%.
In the EU, retail trade volumes of food, beverages and tobacco increased by 0.7%. Non-food products increased by 0.9%.
Regionally, retail trade volumes increased by 10.4% in Luxembourg in May 2024 compared to the same period last year, while in Croatia and Romania they increased by 8.4% and 6.5%, respectively.
Belgium recorded the largest decline in retail trade volumes during the month, falling by 5.2%.
