According to recent updates from Ethereum developers, Ethereum's anticipated Pectra upgrade is scheduled to be released by the end of Q1 2025. Pectra is the next major milestone in Ethereum's development roadmap, following the Dencun upgrade, which was successfully deployed in March.
Latest thoughts on Pectra (Prague + Electra), the next hard fork from Cancun:
*Pectra will ship by the end of Q1 2025.
*To extend the rollup, include PeerDAS.
* Include EOF to improve EVM in both L1 and L2.There is a longer document inside.

The decision was made after Ethereum developers evaluated multiple timeline scenarios, with the team opting for a more cautious approach that would avoid a rushed release before Devcon in November 2024 and allow for the incorporation of additional impactful user features.
“We have observed something similar happen in Cancun and, being realistic, my vote is to aim for a Q1 2025 release for Prague. At its current scope, delaying Prague would have minimal impact on users and could consider expanding the scope to include more impactful features for users,” the Ethereum developers said in the document.
Devcon is the largest developer summit in the Asia Pacific region. This year's event will be held from November 12th to 15th in Bangkok, Thailand, bringing together developers, technology leaders and development tool companies to learn, discuss and debate key opportunities and challenges in the developer ecosystem.
By not releasing a Pectra upgrade before or during Devcon, the development team can effectively monitor Pectra execution.
When deploying Dencun on the Goerli testnet in January, Ethereum developers faced difficulties in reaching a consensus within the expected time frame. The issues were subsequently resolved and the Goerli testnet was finally able to reach a consensus.
In addition to the upgrade timeline, there is also a focus on improving consensus layer coverage and execution layer coverage. Developers aim to integrate PeerDAS into Pectra to bolster Ethereum's data availability capacity ahead of the Osaka upgrade, as noted in the documentation.
Ethereum's Osaka Upgrade is a future hard fork that is expected to include features that were previously considered for the Pektra Upgrade but were postponed. Specifically, the Osaka Upgrade is likely to include the implementation of Verkle Trees, a new data structure designed to enhance Ethereum's scalability and decentralization.
Developers also explored enhancements such as incorporating EOF to improve smart contract security and developer experience, replacing EIP-3074 with EIP-7702 for better account abstraction compatibility, and patching EIP-2935.
“EIP7702 should be decided upon in ACDE, and if so, implemented as a replacement for EIP-3074. We believe it makes sense to do so, as the new transaction types and opcode differences make it a more native AA-compatible solution,” the Ethereum developers wrote.
EIP-7702 is a new transaction type proposed earlier this month by a group of prominent Ethereum developers, including Vitalik Buterin. The proposal is expected to bring similar benefits while addressing the potential risks of EIP-3074.
