Ethereum Name Service (ENS) has launched a legal challenge against Unstoppable Domains (UD). This article focuses on a controversial blockchain naming patent that has caused significant controversy in the blockchain industry.
This patent was originally filed by Unstoppable Domains and ostensibly incorporates technology developed by ENS. This led to accusations of intellectual property misappropriation.
Ethereum Name Service and the Unstoppable Realm: Legal Battle
ENS' legal complaint filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) alleges that Unstoppable Domains wrongfully patented technology that the company originally developed as open source. This technology involves resolving blockchain domain names, a key feature in decentralized web services.
“UD patenting is a huge departure from our ideals. They privatize what should be public and destroy the very foundation and spirit of Web3 and the open internet. and remain steadfast in the fight for the collective good,” the ENS statement said.
The organization expressed its determination to ensure that such technology remains free and accessible, reflecting the fundamental principles of the Web3 ethos.

ENS also argues in its petition that patents held by Unstoppable Domains could limit innovation. The group argues that contributions to this technology are fundamental and should not be controlled by one company's patents.
Additionally, ENS highlighted several other patent applications filed by Unstoppable Domains. Some include the basic technologies needed for blockchain and cross-chain applications. These actions therefore depart from the community-driven approach that is essential to the development of decentralized technologies.
